How indebted is the Brazilian population?

See recent data on household debt and delinquency in Brazil and understand the difference between having debt, being late and living under pressure.

Brazil has a high level of household debt. That does not mean everyone is late, but it shows that many families depend on credit cards, installments, loans or financing to maintain consumption, handle emergencies or anticipate purchases.

The CNC Peic survey tracks household debt and delinquency. Serasa also publishes monthly data on people with restricted credit. These sources show that debt is not a marginal issue in Brazil; it is part of everyday financial life.

The July 2026 Peic release showed household debt rising to 82.0%, the highest level in the series, while overdue bills edged down from 29.9% to 29.8%. The share reporting no ability to pay overdue bills rose from 12.2% to 12.3%.

For July 2026, Serasa reported a record 83.9 million people with restricted credit, up 0.23% in the month. More than 348.3 million outstanding debts totaled R$ 586.4 billion.

Debt is not always delinquency

A person can be indebted because they use a credit card and pay it in full. Another person can have a mortgage that fits income. In these cases, debt exists but is not necessarily a sign of financial disorder.

The problem appears when debt stops being a tool and becomes a crutch. If every month starts with installments, card bills and loan payments, there is less room for food, housing, transport, health, savings and surprises.

Warning signs

  • Using credit card limits because cash ran out.
  • Paying only the minimum card bill.
  • Taking a loan to pay another loan without a plan.
  • Delaying basic bills to pay installments.
  • Not knowing the total debt amount.
  • Being unable to build a reserve even with regular income.

What to do first

List every debt with total amount, installment, interest rate, due date and delays. Separate expensive debt from cheaper debt. Then look at fixed costs, because debt often grows when monthly cost is higher than income or when there is no reserve for predictable expenses.

FAQ

Why should averages be used carefully?
